Ode to a Buffalo Fan



How long must I toil?
To what degree must I suffer?
To whom can I turn for comfort?
Who can understand my grief?

How I rejoiced with the accolades.
Rankings and polls were my friends.
Scarlet was my warm tone,
Grey my cool.

Wondrous were the peaks,
Glorious was the summit.
But the falls were great,
Sudden was the disappointment.

How my envy of the Gator consumes me,
For he knows not the valleys.
He knows triumph three-times,
But my eyes are thrice sad.

Embarrassment befell me,
Shame found my home.
The Heisman and Butkus were not enough;
McDonald's All-Americans did not suffice.

O Buffalo fan, surely you know my plight;
You are familiar with my circumstances.
You, with the Jim Kelly jersey,
How did you endure?

Teach me your ways, O Levy;
Lend me your wisdom, O sages,
Guidance do I seek;
Comfort is my desire.

Did you wear your Bills sweatshirt with pride?
Was a silver medal sufficient?
Or did that which bore the Buffalo,
Get shoved to the depths of thy closet?

You knew despair,
Coming up short was your game.
Yet you continued to battle;
Like the phoenix you returned.

Though we did not have a Norwood,
Would we have been better for it?
Our losses were not close;
Halftime was the end.

How many chances will be awarded?
Surely opportunities are limited.
Are we destined to eternal second place?
Is Runner-Up our name?

'02 is a distant memory,
How great was that day.
The glory of the 'Canes' slaying
Matched equally by SEC beat-downs.

Restore my pride, O Brutus.
Win a big one for your faithful.
For despite my better judgment,
My esteem leans on thee.
