Honesty Is Always The Best Policy, Pt. 1 Why is it so difficult for Americans to be honest with themselves? The current culture of Political Correct-ness has crippled our ability to speak clearly about the issues and be honest with ourselves, with our fellow citizens, with our allies abroad, and with our enemies. I could write about the War on Terror and Islamo-fascists. I could write about public education. I could write about the culture’s obsession with trans-fat and its inability to tell unhealthy, overweight folks that they are fat because of poor decisions they have made. For now, though, I’ll touch on the nation’s fascination with stem cell research. The Media (Drive-By Media, for you Rush listeners; MSM, for you Hewitt listeners) has been less than honest when reporting on stem cell research, science, and possibilities. They’ll have you believe that there is a treasure trove of cures for serious disease that is locked up because evil conservatives want those with the diseases to die. To the suffering Parkinson’s patient: “We’re trying to cure your disease, but until those cruel, heartless conservatives let the government fund stem cell research, you’re just going to have to keep suffering.”
Question: If embryonic stem cell research was so promising and so lucrative, why aren’t venture capitalists signing up for the sure-fire big pay-out that we’re told will happen? The answer to this question is that the venture capitalists are no fools; it is clear that the future of stem cell research is in adult, not embryonic, stem cells. So why the push for GOVERNMENT funded embryonic stem cell research? Because the dirty little secret is that it’s not about finding cures for diseases or treatments for cancers. It’s all about legitimizing abortion. There, I said it. . .it hurts to be faced with the truth, especially when you’re not prepared for it. If cells from newly conceived babies can be shown to cure diseases, then imagine the conversation. It would go something like this: “Alright, alright, Mr. Conservative, I’ll concede that the fetus is more than a mass of tissue and is actually a baby with ‘personhood.’ But we can take that baby (his mother didn’t want him anyway) and we could take cells from the baby (who nobody knows) and we could cure Michael J. Fox.” Mr. Conservative makes a reply. . .any reply. “Mr. Conservative, why do you insist that Michael J. Fox continue to suffer with Parkinson’s disease. You just want him and people like him who suffer every moment of every day to live that way then die. . .” And so it would go.
And the worst perpetrators of dishonesty are those who look the sick in the eye and tell them that hope is on the way. That embryonic stem cells promise make them whole. There is no other way to say it: this is false hope. Why is it so difficult for Americans to be honest with themselves? October 27, 2006
